September 12, 2018

Speaker: Ms. Eva Grayzel

Date: Thursday, September 12, 2018

Time: 5 - 9 PM  |  3 CE Credits

Venue: Royal Melbourne Country Club (4700 Royal Melbourne Dr, Long Grove)

One American dies every hour of every day from oral cancer. Eva came close to being one in this statistic. The details of her delayed diagnosis, intensive treatment and residual side effects bring to life a real patient story, driving home the importance of effective communication and patient education. Putting a face to the disease, Eva inspires audiences with her firsthand account of hardships unanticipated and overcome; courage unknown and discovered; a mother's love tested and triumphant. The personal and emotional content motivates change. Audiences don't just hear her story, they experience it. Become a more vigilant and aware clinician as you improve your oral cancer screening technique along with educating your patients about the disease's signs and symptoms.

The objectives of this course are to integrate oral cancer screenings with education, optimize screening techniques and patient care, to take responsibility for early detection, and to understand long-term effects of radiation to the oral cavity.

Each member is required to bring with them “a challenge” that prevents them from having their “ideal practice” and share with their group. Each group will listen to the challenge from each member and discuss to share their experience and recommendations. At the end of the discussion, they will figure out the “common challenges” and formulate appropriate and practical solutions for each one.

Meeting 7: "Airway and Sleep Prosthodontics: An Introduction to the Future of Restorative Dentistry"

Course Description:

Restoration of the teeth rarely fixes the core cause of airway problem. This specialty moves beyond sleep appliances and their impact on the airway during sleep. A growing body of research is beginning to link nocturnal airway issues in adults and children to tooth wear, myofascial pain, craniofacial deficits, periodontal disease, and malocclusion. This evidence-based course will provide the foundation to differentiate between the categories of sleep-disordered breathing and diagnose the variations from oral signs and symptoms.

Dr. Jeff Rouse will present this unique program on Airway Prosthodontics designed to introduce a shift in perspective on the subject. The presentation will encourage the participants to consider how airway dysfunction can contribute to everyday conditions they see in the practice, and how effective screening can assist with the prevention of obstructive sleep apnea and related complications.

After going through this curriculum, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the terminology of a traditional sleep study, the causes of sleep obstruction, and the health impact of a dysfunctional airway

  • See how understanding inspiratory flow limited breathing can be applied to preventing sleep apnea, and the damaging health effects of apnea-related inflammation and stress

  • Discover the interrelated nature of TMD and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome, and how to properly screen for UARS.
